Assistive Technology tutorial 7

Today we had two guest speakers from Kimiora school in Wellington and Star Education.
They provided us with information and the opportunities to have a turn on the equipment.

Assistive technology is Any item, piece of equipment, or system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals (Cook & Hussey, 2002)
One piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial is the Ergo rest which is a arm support for people when they are using the computers and gives them the ability to type on the key pads with out becoming fatigued examples of people that could benefit form this are stroke and brain injury - as they may have no or minimal strength in there arm but they are able to move there fingers so with the aid of the device typing is able to be completed as the Ergo rest gives the ability to glide and takes the weight of the arm. The rest able to removes and they are fitted with a clamp. There are all sorts of models and different types with different types and fitting but they all follow a similar pattern, the devise is small and compact and is able to be carried to and from work so that typing is able to be done.

As stated it increases the functional capacity of the user as they can type and email if they have problems with fatigue or minimal strength. The rest gives them the ability to glide over the key board and prevent them from becoming fatigued.

the internet and online communities tutorial six

in this weeks tutorial we looked at online communities, in this post I will be lookin into the online community of face book.

the web address is www.facebook.com

the focus of this community is free accessing social networking website. Users can join under categories of city, workplace, school and region. users can connect and communicate with friends. users have the ability to add friends, change profiles and comment other friends facebooks.

the services provided on face book include your own profile page which is a space where you have the ability to notify friends about themselves. users have the ability to unpload photos and videos and send both private and public messages. a public message would show up on the persons profile, where everyone else can read it, however the private message is only able to be read by the person themselves. there is also a number of services where users are able to interact with these include

  • wall- is a space on every user's profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user to see also allows other friends to comment on other comments that have been posted
  • photos- users can upload albums and photos and attach name tags. Friends are also able to comment on photos and send them to their own profile.
  • Status- which allows users to inform their friends of their whereabouts and actions. A user's Wall is visible to anyone who is able to see that user's profile, depending on privacy settings you can make it fully private and prevent anyone looking at it. there is also the ablitity post attachments to the Wall
  • News feeds- appears on every user's homepage and highlights information including profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays of the user's friend and friend suggestions where users who have friends in common with you are suggested to makes friends with
  • notifications- are things that have been sent form other facebook friends, often consisting of quizzes and activities. these are also when people have added you as a friend and you have the option to accept or decline the invitation.
  • chat- is the ability to have have a conversation with anyone of you friends who is one line by typing in the selected chat box.
  • communities- facebook offers the poetial to join groups and communities with other facebook users within the website itself. these can range from appreciation groups for characters in tv shows, food and much more
as stated above facebook is as interactive as you want it to be, and contributions can be made through comments, photos and videos.

I personally think that people choose to contribute to this community, because it is a way to communicate instantly and see photos of friend and family. As a member my self I contribute to this community so that people can see what i have been doing and keep in contact with friends through uploading photos, leaving comments and chatting online. facebook users primarily seek to keep in contact with friends, make new friends and find old ones. they want to see what they have been doing by looking at their photos and videos. and communicate to them by leaving comments and chatting to them on line. Also they want to tell all their friends what they have been doing, by editing their profile and uploading their own personal photos and videos.

The sorts of topics being discussed of face book primarily involve whats happening in their lives, social events, activities, what they are going ot do in the weekend, where the are going etc, its basically a big gossip community . people are constantly updating their profile as their life events change or occur and conversations between friend can last for week and weeks. then when other friend come online users are able to chat instantly.

the ethical issues that may arise within the use of face book includes
-users giving out too much personal information and the threat of sexual predators.
-data theft, or viruses that can get
-people can view peoples profile when they don’t want to and potentially stalk people
-identity theft, by people loggin in to others accounts.
-creation of fake identity and profiles, as a result people become misleaded.
-Other people can put photos and videos of you and tag your name without you permission or knowledge

however there are many benifits online community have over traditional notions of community, these include
-provide large amounts of infomation very quickly
-provides connections over great distances, and able to communicate with people with similar intrests
- allow for silent observation prior to participation
-individuals are able to have equal voice
-fast speed of infomation sharing
- able to moniter and regulate users

but there are still aspects that online communities lack in realtion to traditional communities.
- lack of face to face communication
- ther is potential for misuse and often delusions and reliace on vitural communities
- limted to the communication tools within the online community.
- not always valid infomation being shared
- only people with computers and intrernet are able to join the communities.

we as group used the a story board and scripting aid to help us/aided us in completing the video.

Scripting:
scripting is a way by which the thought and ideas of an author are transmitted to the audience. using scripts when planning a visual production, not just words are but the basis for everything that is both seen and heard and seen on the screen. This allowed us to identify the aim of the film and how the film would go. we did this by first deciding on a topic that was relevant to overcoming adversity. we came up with the concept of going through a push/pull door and reading the sign to over come the problem of not being able to get through the door. we were able to write down the key concepts of the video and this provided us with a template to follow once we began shooting.

Story Board:
Story board is a series of illustrations displayed in sequence for the purpose of visualizing what the film will be. it helped us see what the different camera shots would look like and ensure that that it is well constructed and how they all looked one after the other. it also meant that when it came to filming everyone knew what to do, so no one was confused.

digital cameras use and application tutorial 2

this blog is about digital cameras and there application, as a class we discussed a variety of different aspects.

digital cameras verse old film cameras, is there any advantage to using any particular one, through the discussion we found that they both that positives and negative that made it had to see if there was a clear winner. film based cameras mean that you always have a copy of the photos and theres the aspect of surprise when they are picked up form the developers, in comparison to the digital camera where photos are stored on the computer and you can choose the photos you want developed. however there the potential for photos to be lost if the computer crashes or photos are accidentally deleted. digital cameras can delete the photos that you don't want to print, up side to this is that you will never take a bad photo. in both film and digital cameras there is the need for batteries, in the film cameras film is needed, in digital cameras they need memory sticks.

digital images can be stored, transfered and manipulated using other technology such as photos can be emailed, photos can be put on communications websites such as flicker, myspace, bebo, face book etc. Photos can be discorded and manipulated using photo shop to change the aspects and people in the photos

although digital photos are easy to take, transfer and manipulate, there are many ethical issues that need to be taken into consideration. when OTs take photos on home visit to make things easier and help to describe setting informed consent is needed, as the privacy of the client is being invaded. there is also the possibility that those private photos could get stolen and all information would be lost and the clients information could be used inappropriately. if pictures are put on line, there is a chance that people could manipulate and change the photo with out you unaware. with cameras on phone people are able to take photos in situations where cameras might not be and take them with out people knowing.

photos are being more regularly used in occupational therapy practice, as stated above photos are taken when on home visits. community OTs take photos when they are taking part in activity's to document and show the clients activities within a group. photos are also used to show how clients are seated in wheel chairs.

flicker is a website that provides a way to manage photos and videos and allows people to share their photos acrosss the world other services are

the difference between a digital and optical zoom, is that optical tends to zoom in. Where as digital expands and losses quality of picture.

the term mega pixel reefers to a square that will sit on the mat of your picture. the more pixels means the better the quality photo. there are 1 million pots of light. 6 or 7 pixels for good pictures.

tutorial one infomation technology and ethical issues

information technology/ information communications technology what is it??
is the production, storage, and communication of information using computer and microelectronics (Collins Concise Dictionary, 1989) Hanks, P. (ed). (1989) Collins Concise Dictionary. Glasgow: Bath Press

this form of technology is very prevalent in society and it has become very common place examples of how normal this technology is to us, includes radio wii ipods, mp3, youtube, seacch engines, email, e-books, blogs, GPS... the list is endless! it very easy to see just how accustom and reliant we become on this technology.

I Personally feel comfortable and competent using most of these technologies as i have been brought up with them/ grown up with it and have been exposed to them, although this is my first time i have done a blog before i am able to find it easier because i was able to use my knowledge in setting up email accounts and face book to help me set it up, this made it easier for me to navigate this site also.

this information technology , IT for short is becoming more and more used in Occupational Therapy it is a easier and more efficient way of storing, communicating and gaining knowledge . its been used in the following ways, computers are used to store and access clients information and used to access other information on illness etc. Email is a very important technology that is used to contact equipment providers such as enable and ACC and get equipment for clients. Pagers are also used to contact other therapist or health professionals when they are within the hospital. communications such as cell phones are used when therapist goies on home visits as safety precautions and. telephones are used as generally contact and often used to organize home visits with clients family.

as a result of this information that is being stored and transfered is often private, ethical implications arise. such as the unreliability of technology can cause documents to be lost or not save correctly. Private information of clients could be emailed to wrong address and as a result others will know private/confidential information.
common terms that are used
  • computer ethics is a problem that people are becoming more and more aware of. computer ethics is "a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social contact" (Computer Ethics, 2008) retrieved May 6, 2009, form www.wikipedia.org/wiki/computer_ethics
  • intellectual Property is " is the umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form" (Intellectual Property, 2009) retrieved May 6, 2009, from www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property
  • social justice - "refers to the concept of a society in which justice is achieved in every aspect of society, rather than merely a select group" (Social Justice, 2009) retrieved may 6, 2009, from www.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_justice
  • informed consent is "a leagal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon a clear appreciation and understanding of the facts, implications and future consequences of an action." (informed consent, 2009) retrieved May 6, 2009, from www.wikipedia.org/wiki/informed_consent
it is important for OTs to have a great understanding of (ITC) and the ethical issues it encompasses for our profession and daily life, as OTs we are working with people with a degree of vulnerability so having informed consent is very important, having a vast information about the ethical issues and the works of things will ensure that clients information is safe. it good to have a good knowledge on how to work the technology because it is a universal tool that impacts all aspects of daily life with a greater knowledge people are able to become more organized and work more effectively
